1. Core Fuel Storage Chamber
The main body of a petrol fuel tank is the sealed fuel storage chamber, designed to fit the equipment's installation space. Common shapes include rectangular and cylindrical. It's typically constructed from corrosion-resistant metal or high-strength engineering plastic, capable of withstanding long-term fuel immersion and pressure. The inner walls of the chamber are smooth and flat, with some reinforced ribs to enhance structural stability and prevent deformation from pressure or external forces during long-term use. The bottom of the chamber is typically slightly sloped to facilitate fuel collection at the outlet and minimize residual fuel.
2. Key Functional Components
The fuel pump assembly is located within the chamber, typically mounted near the outlet. It consists of a pump, motor, and filter, responsible for pumping fuel from the tank to the engine. The filter filters impurities from the fuel, preventing them from entering the engine and causing damage. The fuel tank is also equipped with a fuel level sensor, often a float-type structure. The float moves up and down with the oil level, driving the sensor's internal components via a connecting rod, transmitting the fuel level signal to the external fuel gauge, making it easy to check the remaining fuel. Some fuel tanks also have a baffle in the middle of the fuel tank cavity to reduce the noise and shock caused by violent fuel sloshing during driving.
3. Necessary Safety Designs
Internal ventilation structures are connected to external vents and typically contain a small filter. This ensures pressure balance inside and outside the tank, preventing negative pressure during refueling or fuel consumption, and prevents external impurities from entering the fuel tank cavity. Some fuel tanks have a drain plug at the bottom of the fuel tank cavity to regularly drain any accumulated moisture and impurities. Metal fuel tanks may have an anti-corrosion coating on the inner wall, while plastic fuel tanks utilize the inherent properties of the material to reduce fuel corrosion and extend the tank's service life.
4. Auxiliary Connections and Sealing Components
A fuel filler pipe connection is located at the top or side of the tank, connecting to an external fuel filler port. A rubber seal is installed at this connection to prevent fuel leaks. The fuel outlet is located at the bottom or lower side of the tank, connecting to the fuel pump outlet. This connection also features a seal to ensure leak-free fuel transfer. Some fuel tanks also include a built-in access port, sealed with a sealing cap, to facilitate maintenance or replacement of internal components such as the fuel pump and sensor. A multi-layer seal design is used at the junction of the sealing cap and the tank to ensure a complete seal.
