How to prevent rust on an oil storage tank

Preventing corrosion of oil storage tanks is crucial for ensuring their safe operation and extending their service life. For complex corrosive environments, a protective system can be built from the following four dimensions:
1. Source Media Control and Material Optimization: Crude oil often contains corrosive impurities such as inorganic salts, sulfides, and moisture. Therefore, it is essential to address the issue at its source by optimizing processes to reduce the acid value, sulfur content, and water content of the medium. Simultaneously, appropriate manufacturing materials should be selected during the initial tank design phase, such as using high-quality steel with low carbon content and minimal sulfur and phosphorus impurities. The thickness of steel plates should be increased in easily corroded areas to enhance the equipment's corrosion resistance.

2. External Wall Anti-corrosion Coating and Passivation Protection: For the external walls of oil storage tanks exposed to the atmosphere or buried in underground environments, strict coating protection must be implemented. Before construction, the substrate surface must be derusted to a high standard, followed by spraying with epoxy zinc-rich primer, intermediate coat, and polyurethane topcoat to form a dense barrier layer. Furthermore, passivation rust prevention technology can be used to generate a stable oxide film on the metal surface, effectively blocking the corrosion of air, moisture, and chemicals.

3. Internal Wall Zoning and Cathodic Protection
Corrosion protection of the tank's internal walls requires differentiated measures based on the characteristics of each area. For the tank bottom and walls within the water level range where water accumulates for extended periods, a special insulating coating resistant to oil and salt water should be applied; while conductive coatings should be used for the vapor phase areas. Simultaneously, it is strongly recommended to implement sacrificial anode cathodic protection (such as aluminum-based alloy anodes) for the tank bottom plate, effectively preventing galvanic corrosion in the aquatic environment through electrochemical means.

4. Routine Inspection, Maintenance, and Online Monitoring
Preventing corrosion relies on scientific daily management. A corrosion log for the storage tanks must be established, and regular tank thickness measurements, weld flaw detection, and magnetic flux leakage testing should be conducted. During routine inspections, the condition of the anti-corrosion coating should be closely monitored; any peeling or flaking should be promptly reapplied. For stainless steel storage tanks, strong acids and alkalis must be strictly prohibited during cleaning to prevent damage to the surface passivation film, ensuring the equipment is always in good protective condition.
