How to check for small leaks in a fuel Storage tank

1. Conduct a detailed visual inspection
First, clean the surface of the fuel transfer tank to remove dust, oil stains, and other debris, ensuring a clean surface for observing subtle traces. Focus on inspecting the tank body, welds, joints, and connections between valves and pipes, as these areas are common points for minor leaks. Carefully observe for any signs of oil seepage. If you find localized darkening of the surface, wet patches, or a faint oil film, it may indicate slow fuel leakage. Also, check the bottom of the tank and the surrounding ground. If there are irregular light-colored oil stains on the ground, and other sources of contamination are ruled out, further inspection of the corresponding tank wall for leaks is necessary.
2. Use liquid leak detection
Prepare a specialized leak detection liquid. This type of liquid usually has good penetration and foaming properties, allowing for quick detection of small leaks. Apply the leak detection liquid evenly to critical areas such as welds, joints, and valve seals on the tank. Maintain a uniform coating thickness during application to avoid missing leaks due to a thin coating. After a period of time, carefully observe the applied area for the formation of bubbles. If there is a small leak, the leaking gas or fuel will cause the leak detection liquid to produce continuous small bubbles; the location of the bubbles indicates the leak point. After detection, wipe off any remaining leak detection liquid with a clean cloth to prevent the liquid from corroding the tank surface.
3. Conduct gas concentration detection
Use a portable gas detector. This type of instrument can accurately detect the concentration of fuel vapor in the air and is suitable for detecting small leaks that are difficult to observe with the naked eye. Slowly move the detector's probe to various connection points, welds, and areas around the valves of the tank. Maintain a consistent distance between the probe and the tank surface during the movement to ensure accurate detection data. If the detector shows that the gas concentration exceeds the normal range, and the concentration is significantly higher at a specific location, it indicates a small leak at that location. Mark the area and further confirm the leak. During detection, ensure good ventilation in the operating environment to avoid affecting the detection results due to fuel vapor accumulation. Also, strictly follow the operating instructions of the detector to ensure safe detection.
4. Implementing Pressure Stability Monitoring
First, seal the fuel transfer tank and close all inlet and outlet valves to ensure the tank is airtight. Slowly introduce inert gas into the tank using a specialized pressure device until a certain stable pressure is reached. This pressurization process must be performed slowly to avoid sudden pressure increases that could damage the tank. After the pressure stabilizes, record the initial pressure value, then let it stand for a period of time, regularly observing the pressure changes displayed by the pressure monitoring device. If the pressure value continues to decrease, and after ruling out errors in the pressure device itself and the influence of temperature changes on the pressure, it indicates a small leak in the tank, causing the internal pressure to drop. Based on the speed and magnitude of the pressure drop, the severity of the leak can be initially assessed, providing a reference for subsequent leak location and repair.
